About This Game

Includes the original Freespace and the Silent Threat mission pack

They arrived by the thousands, suddenly and without warning.

The heartless Shivans emerged through subspace near Earth, harboring technology light years ahead of anything seen before. They made no attempt to communicate. They did not respond to your heralds. They simply attacked--and destroyed everything in their path.

As a pilot for the Galactic Terran Alliance (GTA) you are no stranger to war. But when racing through space to engage your new enemy for the first time, you sense something different. Suddenly, darkness blankets your craft. Your stomach sinks as your eyes pan across the Shivan flagship's massive body. Then it begins. Swarms of fighters pour from the belly of the flagship and scream towards you. You are about to discover everything you thought you knew about space combat--just changed.

This is the beginning of The Great War.

There are some major glitches on several missions. After days of searching, uninstalling and reinstalling, even restarting the campaign entirely from scratch...Here is the fix I found (in a GOG forum, of all places): *Mission 6 (Paving the Way)*: •Objective: escort the Galatea through an asteroid field to a jump node. •Bug: Galatea gets to the node, then stops, turns, and gets "stuck" (won't enter the node) until it is obliterated by asteroids/Shivan fighters. •Fix: Posted October 03, 2021 by user Why485 "In my experimentation with this bug, I've also found another workaround, albeit an ugly one that requires you to be a bit conscious of the mission's scripting. If you enable time compression (Shift+Comma, Shift+Period by default) just before the ship hits the waypoints, it'll usually work. This works too when the ship gets stuck on a waypoint to get them unstuck, but it can still take them a few (real-time) seconds to align and then complete the waypoint....

Descent: Freespace – The Great War (including Silent Threat) For me, Descent: Freespace – The Great War was the second space flight sim I ever played—Wing Commander being the first, and still my all-time favorite. That said, Freespace came very close. I spent a lot of time completing its missions and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I originally owned the game on DVD along with its expansion, Silent Threat. Unfortunately, the disc eventually stopped working. So when I saw it available on Steam, I had to get it again. Even today, the game holds up surprisingly well. The graphics and gameplay still offer a solid experience. Sure, there are mods available to upgrade the visuals, but there's something special about playing the original version. It brings back great memories of hours spent in epic space battles. It’s definitely a game worth playing. It’s a shame that after Freespace 2, we never got a Freespace 3.
